How to spot a sand dollar that is mostly buried

The central skill is not exceptional eyesight. It is slowing down enough to notice an interruption in an otherwise regular sand pattern.

An intact empty test can chip, crumble, or snap before you reach the parking lot. Its broad, thin shape is vulnerable to bending, edge impacts, and pressure from heavier finds.

When lifting a clearly empty test that may legally be removed, support it flat on an open palm. Do not pinch the edge or hold it between two fingers. Avoid forcefully scraping off attached sand.

For the walk home, use a small rigid container lined with soft cloth or paper. It should:

  • prevent the test from flexing;
  • cushion it from impact;
  • keep it from sliding;
