Neighbourhood or Neighborhood? Which to Use in Miami

Jasmine Ortiz

Both spellings are correct. Learn which fits US English and how Miami’s neighborhood names help you search for hotels, beaches and local outings.

Both are correct: “neighbourhood” is British English; “neighborhood” is American English. For a Miami travel guide or a message written in US English, use neighborhood, without the u. Cambridge lists them as regional spellings of the same word, referring to a local area or the people who live there. Cambridge Dictionary

Writing context Spelling Example
American English neighborhood “Which Miami neighborhood should we stay in?”
British English neighbourhood “Which Miami neighbourhood should we stay in?”

The plural follows the same pattern: neighborhoods or neighbourhoods. Neither spelling describes a different kind of place. Choose the version that matches your audience and keep it consistent; preserve the original spelling when quoting a source or reproducing an official title.

How the word helps with Miami trip planning

Miami’s official visitor bureau uses the American spelling in its neighborhood directory. That directory is useful for browsing real places rather than searching only for “best neighborhood.” For example, it highlights:

  • Wynwood for street murals, Wynwood Walls, galleries and restaurants.
  • Little Havana for Cuban food and cultural stops along Calle Ocho.
  • South Beach for the beach, Art Deco buildings, dining and shopping.

Use those place names to make your search more specific: “Wynwood galleries,” “Little Havana Calle Ocho” or “South Beach hotels.” The neighborhood name is more useful to your itinerary than the spelling variation.

Don’t confuse a neighborhood with a whole city

A visitor directory’s “neighborhoods” section is a browsing category, not necessarily a list of areas within one municipality. The bureau’s area directory includes Miami Beach, which it describes as a city, alongside neighborhoods such as Wynwood. It also includes Coral Gables, another city.

South Beach is an area within Miami Beach, not another name for all of Miami Beach. The bureau’s South Beach guide places Ocean Drive, Lummus Park and South Pointe Park there.

When choosing accommodation, check the actual address and routes to your planned outings—not just a broad “Miami” label. Our Miami areas guide compares visitor bases, while the car-free Miami plan helps you turn that choice into a transport plan.
