6 Cheap Things to Do in Miami, With Budget-Friendly Day Plans

Compare free museums, a $5 historic-house tour, beach walks and low-cost parks in Miami, with neighborhood day plans and transit tips.
A beach-and-park day can cost nothing in admission; a historic-house outing can cost $5 per adult. The trick is choosing activities near your base rather than spending your savings on rides between neighborhoods.
These six picks cover Miami and nearby Miami Beach and North Miami Beach—separate cities within the wider destination. Listed prices and regular schedules were checked October 9, 2026. Food, transport and rentals are extra unless stated otherwise. For a broader no-admission list, see our free things to do in Miami; this guide also includes inexpensive paid outings.
1. Pair South Pointe Park with beach time
Admission: free. Best for: a South Beach outdoor half-day.
At the southern tip of Miami Beach, South Pointe Park gives you waterfront paths, views toward PortMiami and Downtown, a pier and direct beach access. You can make this a walk-and-picnic outing without renting chairs or buying an attraction ticket. The destination bureau’s free-activities guide includes both public beach time and South Pointe Park.
The park is at 1 Washington Avenue, with public restrooms, a water fountain and paid parking; the city lists its hours as sunrise to sunset. Walking from a nearby hotel avoids that parking expense. City park details
Add a self-guided look at Ocean Drive’s building exteriors rather than a paid tour. Our Art Deco walking guide provides a route. For swimming, check current beach conditions and health advisories and stay near a lifeguard.
2. Visit The Barnacle in Coconut Grove
Admission: $2; $5 total for an adult including the house tour. Best for: inexpensive history and a bayfront picnic.
The Barnacle’s tree-lined approach and waterfront lawn make it a useful low-cost anchor for a Grove outing. The 1891 house was the home of Ralph Middleton Munroe, and the grounds overlook Biscayne Bay. Find it at 3485 Main Highway. Park overview
Grounds admission is $2 per pedestrian or bicyclist, with children five and under free. The separate house tour costs $3 for ages 13 and up, or $1 for ages six to twelve. Parking is not included.
The park opens Thursday–Monday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. House tours run at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., with a maximum of ten visitors each. Special-event prices can differ. Official hours and fees
Pack lunch and build the rest of the outing around our walkable Coconut Grove day plan.
3. Explore design at The Wolfsonian–FIU
Admission: $12 for adults, or free during eligible visits. Best for: a South Beach indoor stop.
The Wolfsonian is a good alternative to another beach afternoon if you enjoy design, furniture, posters and the ways objects communicate ideas. Its collection strengths include political propaganda, industrial design and works on paper. Museum overview
Regular admission is $12 for adults and $8 for seniors, students with ID and children six to eighteen. Florida residents enter free, as do several other eligible groups. Everyone can use Free Fridays, 6–9 p.m.
It is closed Monday and Tuesday; otherwise, regular hours begin at 10 a.m. Holiday closures also apply. Miami Beach Trolley and Metrobus stops are within one block. Admission, hours and transport details
4. See contemporary art at ICA Miami
Admission: free year-round. Best for: an indoor visit in the Design District.
The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami offers free admission throughout the year, so you do not have to arrange your trip around a monthly discount day. Its exhibitions emphasize contemporary experimentation and local, emerging and under-recognized artists. About ICA Miami
The galleries at 61 NE 41st Street open Wednesday–Sunday, 11 a.m.–6 p.m., with holiday closures. Reserve a free ticket ahead: the museum highly recommends advance booking, and walk-ins may be unable to enter when the building reaches capacity. ICA Miami’s visitor information
Afterward, explore the Design District’s public art and landscaped plazas without turning the outing into a shopping trip. The destination bureau identifies this neighborhood walk as another free activity.
5. Time PAMM for free admission
Admission: free at scheduled times; otherwise $18 for adults. Best for: a Downtown art outing.
Pérez Art Museum Miami is particularly good value when your dates match either of these windows:
- Thursdays after 5 p.m.: free admission, with the museum open until 9 p.m. Visitor information
- The second Saturday of each month: free admission all day, with art-making activities from 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Second Saturday program
PAMM is at 1103 Biscayne Boulevard. Outside those windows, adult admission is $18, and the museum closes Tuesday and Wednesday. Tickets are subject to capacity, so check availability ahead. Tickets and hours
Free admission does not mean free parking: PAMM lists an $18 flat garage rate. That makes a car-free visit worth considering. Parking information
6. Walk and picnic at Oleta River State Park
Admission: $6 per vehicle for two to eight people. Best for: a group already near North Miami Beach or traveling by car.
Oleta has a three-mile paved walking trail and first-come picnic tables and grills. Keep the outing inexpensive by walking and bringing lunch; kayak, paddleboard and bike rentals are separate purchases. Park activities
Entry costs $4 for a single-occupant vehicle, $6 for a vehicle with two to eight people, or $2 per pedestrian or bicyclist. The park opens daily from 8 a.m. until sundown. Official fees
The entrance is at 3400 NE 163rd Street, North Miami Beach—not a South Beach walkable add-on. Check the journey before choosing it, and arrive early on busy weekends. The park warns that capacity closures last until the following day and recommends calling before arrival to check capacity. Location and capacity notice
Three inexpensive day combinations
These are activity-admission totals, not full-day spending estimates. Use regular opening days and check for holiday or special-event changes.
| Choose this area | Suggested combination | Admission budget |
|---|---|---|
| South Beach on Friday | Morning beach, afternoon South Pointe Park, Wolfsonian after 6 p.m. | $0 |
| Coconut Grove, Thursday–Monday | Barnacle grounds, adult house tour, picnic and neighborhood walk | $5 per adult |
| Downtown on Thursday | Metromover ride, then PAMM after 5 p.m. | $0 |
For Downtown and Brickell, Metromover remains free. Metrobus costs $2.25 at full fare, and EASY Card stored-value or contactless bank-card/digital-wallet payments have a $5.65 daily cap across Metrobus and Metrorail. Use the same payment card or digital wallet consistently; cash bus payments require a new full fare each time you board. County fare rules
Within Miami Beach, the free citywide trolley runs 8 a.m.–11 p.m. daily, with approximately twenty-minute average service frequency along each route. Use it for local Beach trips and plan a separate connection for mainland stops. Trolley information
Carry water and sun protection, put longer walks earlier in the day, and choose an open museum before rain arrives. A free Thursday-evening museum is useful for that evening—not as a guaranteed midday storm backup. For the wider transport plan, see how to explore Miami without renting a car.
